The definition of electronic commerce

-The definition of electronic commerce- Electronic commerce (EC) is a new concept that can be described as the process of buying and selling goods or services on the World Wide Web of the Internet (Shim, Qureshi, Siegel, Siegel, 2000) or the sale or exchange of products, services, information, through a network of information including internet (Turban, Lee, King, Chung, 2000). Meanwhile, according to Kalakota and Whinston, SC is defined from several perspectives following:


  • From the communications perspective, EC is the delivery of information, products / services, or payments via telephone lines, computer network or other electronic means
  • From the business process perspective, EC is the application of technology towards the automation of transactions and the company's work flow
  • From a service perspective, EC is a tool that meets the needs of the company, the consumer and the management to cut service costs while improving the quality of goods and speed of service
  • From an online perspective, EC relates to the capacity of the sale and purchase of products and information on the Internet and other online services


Some people view the term commerce (trade) as transactions carried out between companies that partner. Hence the term electronic commerce narrow memorable for a number of people. Thus, many prefer to use e-business, which refers to the definition of e-commerce more broadly, not just selling and buying, but also means serving customers and collaborating with business partners, as well as the implementation of electronic transactions within an organization.
